Hey y'all! 👋 Here's a small collection of creative writing games I think you'd enjoy, for a different evening or a sleepless night. I'll just write up a small summary for each one of them. Of course, feel free to go and purchase any of them if you'd like to support the creators! ♥

They all only require a die (mostly 6-sided, sometimes 10 or 20), a deck of standard playing cards, or both. If you don't have either of those, remember that there are lots of phone apps out there to simulate throwing dice or drawing cards. 😉 Anyways.. enjoy!

💌 Quill: A Letter-Writing Roleplaying Game for a Single Player

Let's start with a classic in the solo roleplaying world! A brief summary of this beautiful game:

Quill is a solo roleplaying game with a twist. Instead of hacking goblins and looting caves, you are writing letters. Rather than having attributes like strength or dexterity, characters in Quill use Penmanship, Language and Heart. In a game of Quill you will write real letters, with the aim to craft the best, most beautiful missive possible in order to get a favourable response. You will use words from the Ink Pot to inspire your letter - but be warned, should you roll badly you could end up writing a bad letter.

🌄 Passage

Passage is a tiny storytelling game revolving around a table of 20 domains, which constitute prompts for your writing. The game progresses on a narration/action loop. In the narration step, you roll three dice (or, well, one die three times 😅) to get three random domains, and combine those to let your imagination wander and come back with a paragraph of story. Then, in the action step, your protagonist acts in response to the piece of story you just wrote. Rinse and repeat, until you reach a natural end to the story.. or you end up writing a best-selling novel. 😁

✨ Alone Among the Stars

This one is another absolute classic, and one that spawned many many hacks (games created by applying twists to an existing one), mainly thanks to its disarming simplicity. The whole thing is a four-page PDF, with big fonts!

To give you an idea of what you can write with this game, here's a snippet from the comments on the game page:

Together Among the Stars 👭

There is also a 2-player version, , which is rather lovely, and downloadable here for free! 👋

👑 Alone Among the Court

So here it is, a hack of AAtS! I absolutely love this setting, which is summarized well in the opening:

Isn't that exciting? 🤩 I found this through a reddit post with a complete game session and a wonderfully hand-drawn map. The game doesn't call for a map, of course, but the beauty of this stuff is that you can enrich games with as many extratextual bits as you want! 🥰

🧛‍♀️ Thousand Year Old Vampire

Alright, let's get to the dark stuff now! 🧛‍♀️ This game explores a fantastic concept: what is it like to live for centuries as a vampire, and what does that mean in terms of memory? I'm just going to put a screenshot of the opening page here, because I couldn't describe it any better:
